Our Mission
Australian Presbyterian World Mission exists to glorify God by sending believers overseas and to Aborigines within Australia to teach the gospel, to train leaders, and to partner with and resource the church across the world.
Our Vision
The Australian Presbyterian World Mission Committee envisions that:
- Healthy Presbyterian congregations will teach Christ’s command for all believers to be involved in world-wide mission.
- Healthy Presbyterian congregations will select, train, send, and support mature Christians to enter into cross-cultural mission service as well as be involved in local mission.
- Missionary candidates and serving missionaries will be cared for with the love of Christ according to their specific needs and circumstances.
- Partner Churches will be encouraged and strengthened in their local service of God, and challenged to also be involved in world mission.
- Partner Agencies will be encouraged and strengthened by the believers who go from Presbyterian congregations through APWM to serve with them globally.
- Federal and State Assemblies will resource though funding and providing administrative staff to lead and grow the ministry of APWM.
- The day of the LORD shall be advanced by the bringing into the kingdom of God people who have been purchased by the blood of Christ from every tribe and language and people and nation.
Our Core Values
We value the glory of our Sovereign/Supreme God
Our God is our majestic and holy creator, sustainer and Saviour. Therefore all glory and honour is rightly owed to Him. All His ways are good and loving. Therefore our greatest joy is to give Him glory. One of the ways we bring Him the most glory is to be involved in mission to our world in His name since mission is His idea and practice. (1 Chronicles 16:28-31; Revelation 5:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:19; Matthew 28:18-20; John 17:15-19; Acts 1:8)
We value the Word of God
The Bible is inspired God’s word and was given so that the people of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. So we seek to conduct all our affairs according to the teaching of the Word of God in order to please Him. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21; John 8:29; 2 Corinthians 5:9)
We value the Gospel of Jesus Christ
There is no other name under heaven apart from Jesus whereby people can be saved. So in the power of the Holy Spirit we seek to proclaim to the people of every nation in the world, God's redemption in Jesus Christ, who died and bodily rose from the dead to pay the penalty for our sin and who will one day bodily return to this earth in glory. (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Acts 1:8; 1 Thessalonians 1:5; 1 Corinthians 15:1-7, 12-20; Acts 1:11)
We value People
We believe that all people are created in the image of God and so have great value and dignity. Yet as sons and daughters of Adam all people are sinners, and are by nature under God’s judgment. So our desire is that in association with other churches and missions, we will seek to take the gospel to every person on earth. We do this so that though the ministry of the Son and the Spirit each one will be reconciled to God and restored into the likeness of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:27; 3:20; Romans 6:23; 1 Corinthians 15:22; Romans 10:14-15; 1 John 3:2)
We value the Local Church
Christ reaches the world through the local church. It is also through the church that God is displaying His glory to the powers and authorities to the heavenly realms. So we seek to serve the local church by encouraging, resourcing, and challenging it to engage in world mission. (Ephesians 3:10; 1 Timothy 3:15; Colossians 1:24)
We value Prayer
Our God is sovereign and only He can change people’s hearts and minds; only He can equip His children to serve. So we seek to pray to our God. Therefore we ask God, the LORD of the harvest to give believers a mission heart and mind; to lead unbelievers to hear and accept the gospel; to grow churches to grow to display the distinctive love of Christ both to one another and to the watching world; so that the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the rulers and authorities in heavenly realms. We ask all this so that the kingdom of God may come in all its glory. (Matthew 6:9-13; Mark 9:29; Matthew 9:36-38; Philippians 4:6; John 13:34-35; Ephesians 3:10)
We value Good Stewardship
God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. So we seek to wisely, generously and faithfully use all that He has given us – time, abilities, income, possessions, wisdom – for His glory; for the welfare of His servants; and for the proclamation of the gospel in word and deed. We recognise that from time to time this involves taking risks in our Saviour’s name, always recognising that our God is sovereign. (James 1:16; 1 Peter 4:10-11; Matthew 25:1-30; Luke 12:42-48; Luke 16:8-12)
We value Servant Hearts
Jesus came, not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. So we seek to serve one another, to serve our members, to serve the local and overseas church sacrificially for His glory. (Matthew 20:28; Matthew 25:44-45; Luke 22:26-27; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 4:8-11)
We value Compassionate Love
Our God is compassionate and gracious, and Jesus said that it is by our love for one another that our discipleship is known. So we seek by the power of the Holy Spirit to display graciousness and compassion and to love one another, both within APWM and beyond to all with whom we interact, in person, through technology, and in prayer, with the compassion and graciousness of Christ Jesus. (Exodus 34:6-7; Psalm 112:4; John 13:34-35; 2 Corinthians 1:3-7; Colossian 3:12)
